Franco Saudelli

The Italian author and artist was born on 4. August 1952 in Latina (Lazio).

His name is closely tied to a special kind of erotic comic: the bondage and fetish comic - and here mainly the foot fetish. But unlike many of his fellow artists, Saudelli knotted his characters with more playful wit - but in the bondage staging Saudelli's figures are certainly in honour of pioneers such as Eric Stanton or John Willie.

Saudelli owes his fame in the comic book business to his creation La Bionda (The Blonde).

But before the erotic freestyle, first of all to the "serious duty".

The collaboration with "author legend" Ricardo Barreiro deserves special mention. After his texts, Eura Editoriales magazine LancioStory created the series L´Uomo di Wolfland, a futuristic story about a fascist regime. For the same magazine, Saudelli also designed "Giorno senza fine", a post-apocalyptic science fiction story written by Michael Gazarre, in addition to a few short stories.

Along with the work for Eura, Saudelli also found a home at Orient Express magazine. Iberland, written by Ottavio de Angelis, which was later taken over by Circus magazine in France, appeared there and published three albums of Verlagshaus Glénat in 1983,1985 and 1986. Like Wolfland, "Iberland" tells of an apocalyptic totalitarian future.

In 1985, the story "A nostra immagine" was presented in the magazine Comic Art - the successor to Orient Express - and Dargaud took over the comic under the French title "Faisons l´homme à notre image". Author was again Ottavio de Angelis.

Then, in March 1987, "La Bionda" - in issue 31 of the comic art magazine - appeared with which Saudelli achieved an international success.

The adventures of the slightly scatterbrained, crazy, sexy thief are always one step ahead of the completely absurd. But it is precisely the mixture of a crazy, satirical story, erotic fetish and bondage elements, as well as a main protagonist, who is both "slightly" crazy and sexually appealing, that make up the success of the series. A recipe that also works for other comic strip colleagues such as Tank-Girl, Bomb Queen (Image Comic) or Harley Quinn (DC).

"La Bionda" is very interesting for bondage enthusiasts, because Saudelli knows the different types and techniques and shows them in detail.

The captivating stories seem quite erotic, but the comic never becomes explicit - or even pornographic -. Male characters do not play a role in the "blonde" world, or lead an extra existence.

In the first story, Colpo doppio (Comic Art # 31-36 (1986/1987), Saudelli describes how La Blonde escapes from prison to screw up her next "crime", the kidnapping of biscuit queen Sally Rich, with Madame Milly, an underworld greatness who also has a business interest in the rich Sally. After a "Holiday Special", the blonde beauty returned a year later in issue 50 with the short story series Bondage Palace (1988). This was followed - quite late - by Bondage Palace 2 - the Return (1990) and Fobus III from issue 85 (1991).

The futuristic, matriarchal utopian city of Babilonia is the domain of the thieving blondes. It's rarely boring in her life, because Saudelli always puts new bizarre figures aside - or in the way of Saudelli's buxom mask wearer, both as a partner and as an opponent. For example, the cunning crimilde - whose appearance is somewhat similar to the characters of Baldazzini -, the appetizing Gary and Suen bites, the former drama diva Anita Berg (all from "Bondage Palace") or the already mentioned sadistic Milly (from "Double Cross"/"Colpo doppio").

Especially among the FFF, the "Foot-Fetish-Friends","La Bionda" is a real treat. Here the parallels to Saudelli's wife Giovanna Casotto's work become more than obvious.

"The Blonde" has been published by Comic Art, Selenium, Blue, Diva and Glamour, in France by Dargaud and in the USA by Eros Comix.

In 1994/1995, Granata Press der blonden Ver Madness witmete its own series of books, but after ten editions, the sails had to be removed again. Eros Comix from the USA took over the series years later and stopped after only six editions.

12 Pearls, the epithet of the series, the "qualitative deterioration" is already noticeable, since Saudelli worked here partly with co-drawers and incers such as Caracuzzo, Di Vincenzo and Lillo, who could only keep the quality of Saudelli to a limited extent.

The progressive change in style of "La Bionda" from the beginning realistically to more cartoon-like didn't benefit the figure.

Together with his friend Massimo Rotundo, a small series of agents for L' Espresso Più was created between 1987 and 1989 with the overtitle "Esotica".

Saudelli teamed up with fetish colleague Roberto Baldazzini - both interested in bondage and S&M art photography - to jointly develop the two volumes of Bizarreries published by Glittering Images.

Baldazzini: "We quickly realized that we share many artistic interests, such as drawing illustrations and comic pages, based on photographs that we had taken ourselves. The love for the pioneers of the industry like John Willies or Eric Stanton, as well as the incomparable Bettie Page. Also for magazines such as Bizarre or Exotique or our common fondness for bondage and fetish, scenarios of dominating and submissive women, as well as the desire for new female characters" (from Erotic Comic, Tim Pilcher).

In August 1996, Saudelli joined Sergio Bonelli's publishing house and designed several editions of the famous Dylan Dog series. He deputed in number 119 with the story of the author Tiziano Sclavi "L´Occhio del gatto". Further contributions can be found in the issues 145 and 177, as well as in the Gigante issues 5 and 7. Saudelli was able to impress his "look" on this venerable and popular horror series by letting barefoot beauties - à la "La Bionda" - rise out of the comic pictures on several occasions.

Franco Saudelli has a very clear, elegant and modern style of drawing, which has many parallels to Giovanna Casotto's style. This is no accident, as Casotto has worked with Saudelli for many years. Casotto learned the tricks of comic art from him, developed joint projects and was also available as a model. Saudelli's style is perhaps a little bit "cartoon-like" than that of Casotto.

Recently Saudelli has turned more to fetish photography and is working on his projects with different models.

Franco Saudelli

Der italienische Autor und Zeichner wurde am 4. August 1952 in Latina (Lazio) geboren.
